New Year, Old Problems.

President Barack Obama has had to contend with a boatload of domestic issues during his first year in office, including baggage he inherited from the Bush administration: closing Guantanamo; returning America to the rule of law; battling a divided Congress over health care reform; and curing a troubled economy. If that’s not enough to sink his administration, there are even more problems on the international front: global warming; his unpopular troop surge in Afghanistan; militants moving into tribal areas of Pakistan; and even the embarrassing discovery that one major funding source for the Taliban are bribes paid by Americans to keep U.S. supply convoys safe from attack!

As the Clock Winds Down…

To Iraqi elections and the withdrawal of U.S. troops, insurgents on Dec. 8 detonated a series of car bombs in Baghdad near government buildings, killing at least 127 people and wounding nearly 500. It must be galling for an American president who vowed to rid the world of nuclear weapons that critical negotiations with Tehran have stalled—not to mention that Israel won’t even permit international inspections of its nuclear arsenal, and many of its minions in Congress are chomping at the bit for a…

Military Strike on Iran.

International and domestic surveys alike show that people are disappointed by Obama’s performance. But there is one sure-fire way he can turn his ship around, earn his Nobel Peace Prize, and create a domino effect for peace: He can listen to the growing number of Christian, Jewish and Muslim voices who have been singing the same tune the Washington Report choir has hummed for years. As our readers know, and our hundreds of articles demonstrate, issue after issue, people around the world want…

Peace in the Middle East.

It’s Been One Year Since Israel’s…

Murderous Operation Cast Lead. Why not mark this horrific anniversary by finally opening Gaza’s borders and resuming the flow of food, water, warm clothes, cooking gas, construction materials, books and other necessities? Israel’s crippling economic siege has sealed Gaza’s borders since June 2006, when a single Israeli soldier named Gilad Shalit was captured by resistance fighters in Gaza. Meanwhile, according to Addameer Prisoners’ Support and Human Rights Association, as of November Israel was holding 7,383 Palestinians prisoner, including 32 women, 340 children and 25 elected members of the Palestinian Legislative Council. Addameer calculates that Israel has arrested or detained close to 800,000 Palestinians since 1967, when the group began compiling figures. That means that 60 to 70 percent of Palestinian adult males have been imprisoned…

At Least Once in Their Lives.

We can’t resist mentioning one recent report: Israeli officials placed a cat in solitary confinement in the Nakab desert prison. The cat, one of many adopted by Palestinians held in various Israeli prisons, allegedly moved bread and notes between the cells of prisoners languishing in solitary confinement.

In Exchange for One Soldier…

Will Israel dare to release Marwan al-Barghouti, the senior Fatah leader who is a popular hero and who could unify Palestinian voters and build public support for a real peace agreement with Israel? Israel might finally have what they claim to want (despite all evidence to the contrary): a real…

Damage Control, Israeli-Style.

Still reeling from the fallout of the Goldstone Report and international outrage over Operation Cast Lead, and from worldwide disgust with Israel’s evictions of Palestinians and continued settlement growth, Israel is again in a pickle. Unlike in previous years, the EU Heads of Commission of Jerusalem made its annual report public, proclaiming its support for the resumption of negotiations leading to final status talks over the “core issues”: borders, Jerusalem, refugees, security and water. Europe’s Israel Lobby did manage to get the Europeans to delete Sweden’s proposal that Jerusalem serve as the capital of both countries—but overall Israel is losing its control over media perceptions of its illegal and inhuman occupation. World opinion of Israel finally is shifting in the favor of justice, as more and more people are saying…

“Enough, Already!”

“Remember These Children”…

One of the projects of which we’re most proud (<www.rememberthesechildren.org>), has been selected by the U.S.A. Committee for World Day of Prayer as a vehicle to raise the public’s awareness of the impact of conflict on youth in Palestine and Israel. On the first Friday in March of 2010, people around the world will pray for peace and change. We hope you’ll join in this important effort.
