Mark Kirk Eyes Obama Senate Seat, Shelley Checks With Mort
By Janet McMahon
It’s undoubtedly no accident that pro-Israel PACs gave Rep. Mark Kirk (R-IL) more contributions than were received by all but two senators running for re-election in 2008 (and both of whom were in dire straits). Kirk reportedly is contemplating a run for the Senate seat vacated by Barack Obama and currently occupied by Sen. Roland W. Burris, appointed by Illinois’ disgraced former Gov. Rod Blagojevich.
But Kirk’s credentials apparently are not quite good enough for Rep. Shelley Berkeley (D-NV), the House’s career queen of pro-Israel PAC contributions. Regarding a nonbinding resolution criticizing UNRWA introduced by Kirk and Rep. Steve Rothman (D-NJ), Berkeley said, “I was delighted when [they] introduced it—but first I called Mort [Zionist Organization of America President Morton A. Klein] to make sure it was strong enough before I signed on.”
