Fellowships

The Institute for the Study of Literature, Religion and Society in the Contemporary Middle East will offer two Rockefeller Resident Fellowships for the 1990-91 academic year on the topic of the relations between literature and the religious revival in the contemporary Middle East. Qualified scholars (Ph.D. or equivalent) who expect to be able to complete major research and writing on the above topic may obtain further information and application materials from Dr. Fedwa Malti-Douglas, Center for Middle Eastern Studies, SSB 3.122, The University of Texas at Austin, Austin, TX 78712. Application deadline is Dec. 31.

Lectures and Symposia

Dr. Alexander Melamid of New York University's Department of Economics will conduct a seminar on "Saudi Arabia and Oil Pricing," Dec. 4, 4:30 pm, in the Stephen Chan Auditorium, Lower Level 3-4, at NYU's Hagop Kevorkian Center for Near Eastern Studies, 50 Washington Square South (at Sullivan St.), New York City.

Georgetown University's Center for Contemporary Arab Studies presents Edmund Burke III, professor of History at UC-Santa Cruz, lecturing on "Was There an Islamic Moral Economy? A Study of the Patrona Hall Rebellion," Dec. 4, 4:15 pm, Room 622 of the University's Intercultural Center.

Georgetown's Kareema Khoury Annual Distinguished Lecture in Arab Studies will be delivered this year by Prof. Trevor LeGassick, of the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, on "Contemporary Arabic Literature in Society," focusing on the work of Naguib Mahfouz. The University of Pennsylvania's Middle East Center (839 Williams Hall, 36th & Spruce St., Philadelphia, PA 19104; (215) 898-6335) presents a lecture on "Timurid Architecture: Product of Region or Dynasty?" by Dr. Renata Holod of the Dept. of Art History, Dec. 8, 3-5 pm, in Room 207 of Meyerson Hall.

The Middle East Institute presents a public program on the intifada on Dec. 11, 5:30 pm, in the Institute's Boardman Room, 1761 N St., NW, Washington, DC 20036. There is a $5 admission charge for non-members.

On Dec. 12, 6 pm, the Middle East Institute, in cooperation with the American Research Center in Egypt, presents a free public program on the pyramids with Egyptologist Zahi Hawas, at the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies, Rome Auditorium, 1619 Massachusetts Ave., Washington, DC.

The fourth program in the Qaboos Center Series will be held Dec. 13, 5:30 pm, in the Middle East Institute's Boardman Room. Dr. Emile Nakhleh will speak on "Threats to Stability in the Gulf States."
